afternoon…

My early afternoon was spent familiarizing myself with some of the lab’s internal software, completing a bit of paperwork, and undertaking readings related to the background of the ETCL. At 4pm we went over to lounge of the University Club to hear Catherine Caws (Associate Professor and Chair, Department of French) speak as part of the “Nuts and Bolts of the Digital Humanities” series organized by Laura Estill.  Her informal talk “Using Digital Tools to Engage Learners,” was engaging, informative, and produced an interesting discussion.  Laura posted a great summary on her DH Day blog.

I had a wonderful first day at the ETCL!  I’m very grateful for the warm welcome I received from everyone and am excited to be working at the lab full-time very soon!

Had lunch at the student union building and took a little stroll around the lovely UVic campus.  Stopped at the library to send off some UBC related emails and search Craigslist for more apartment postings (received some helpful recommendations on areas this morning from Alyssa).  I returned to the Lab to find the Skype Wall fully operational (we were installed simultaneously this morning).  Aaron and I just waved to one another — cool and a bit surreal.

My first morning

Excited to have my first day of work at the ETCL on the Day of DH!  This morning I met my new colleagues, setup the iMac and display Dan ordered for me (dual 27″ screens yay!), and began getting up to speed on the functioning of the Lab.  A great first day so far!
