Nuts & Bolts

I attended a fascinating Nuts & Bolts session, coordinated as always but the very capable Laura Estill.  It featured Catherine Caws from the Department of French, and the topic was “Using Digital Tools to Engage Learners.”  Catherine spoke about her experiences in digital pedagogy as it applies to language learning in higher education.  Nuts & Bolts is an informal discussion series, and so there was plenty of time for questions after Catherine’s talk.  It was a very successful talk, with many from the lab in attendance, as well as other interested parties.

Skype Walls

Almost immediately after sitting at my computer and beginning to sift through my email, people from facilities management came to install the Skype Walls.  These are monitors attached to walls that will be running Skype at all times.  They attached them in both B043b, the main lab, and B046, the “exclave.”  I then set up the computers and peripherals.  Now, hopefully, we will be able to collaborate more closely and work as if we were sharing the same space.  Eventually we will link up to other associated labs and teams at other universities, such that we will create a geographically diverse but integrated workspace.

New bike

I arrived to work at the Electronic Textual Cultures Laboratory on a new bicycle.  This may not have a lot to do with DH, but it was certainly enjoyable and set the tone for the rest of the day!
